Wax Play Glossary

A comprehensive guide to the terminology of wax play, sensory exploration, and safety frameworks. Education comes before sales.

A

Aftercare

The period following a formal scene or intense play where partners consciously tend to each other's physical, psychological, and emotional needs. Effective aftercare helps mitigate sub drop or top drop and restores equilibrium. It can include physical touch, hydration, reassurance, or quiet time together.

D

Drop-in

A transient psychological state where a participant in kink or sensory play enters a deep, almost trance-like state of relaxation and surrender. In wax play, the rhythmic sensation of heat and weight often facilitates a profound drop-in.

E

Edge / Edging

In sensory play, edging refers to pushing a participant close to their physical or psychological limit without crossing it, maintaining intensity for an extended period.

M

Melting Point

The exact temperature at which solid wax turns into liquid. In wax play, this is the most critical safety metric. SenseMe candles are engineered to specific melting points (50°C, 60°C, or 75°C) to ensure predictable sensation levels.

Melt Pool

The liquid wax that forms around the wick when a candle is lit. A wide, deep melt pool is ideal for wax play, providing an abundant supply of evenly heated wax for continuous pouring.

P

Patch Test

A safety protocol involving pouring a small amount of wax onto a less sensitive area of the skin (such as the inner forearm) to check for temperature tolerance and allergic reactions before beginning a full session.

R

RACK (Risk-Aware Consensual Kink)

An ethical framework acknowledging that all kink activities—including wax play—carry inherent risks. RACK emphasizes that participants must be fully informed of these risks and explicitly consent to them, taking proactive steps (like using body-safe wax) to mitigate them.

S

Safeword

A predetermined, unambiguous word or signal used to immediately pause or stop play. A vital tool for ensuring consent remains active throughout a wax play session.

Sensory Deprivation

The practice of limiting one or more senses (often sight, using a blindfold) to heighten the perception of other senses. In wax play, sensory deprivation dramatically intensifies the anticipation and sensation of the hot wax.

Soy-Paraffin Blend

A specific mixture of waxes used in SenseMe candles. Soy wax lowers the melting point and creates a softer pool, while paraffin adds structure and allows for slightly sharper, more distinct heat transfer.

SSC (Safe, Sane, Consensual)

A foundational ethical framework in BDSM and kink. It dictates that all activities must be physically and psychologically safe, soundly judged (sane), and explicitly agreed upon by all participants.

Sub Drop

A neurochemical 'crash' that can occur hours or days after intense sensory or BDSM play. It is characterized by feelings of sadness, lethargy, or anxiety, caused by the sudden drop in endorphins and adrenaline. Proper aftercare significantly reduces the risk of sub drop.

T

Temperature Play

A form of sensory play involving the application of hot or cold stimuli to the skin to provoke physiological and psychological responses. Hot wax play is a specialized subset of temperature play.

Top / Bottom / Switch

Roles often assumed during play. The 'Top' typically orchestrates the scene and controls the wax pour. The 'Bottom' receives the sensation. A 'Switch' is someone who enjoys playing both roles.

Top Drop

Similar to sub drop, a neurochemical and emotional crash experienced by the Top after a scene, often manifesting as guilt, anxiety, or exhaustion. Tops require aftercare too.

W

Wick

The braided cotton string in the center of the candle. SenseMe uses custom wick configurations (single or triple wicks) tailored to each temperature tier to optimize the melt pool size and heat distribution.
